Worms, Penguins, and Bar Graphs

We spent some time this week with worms! Yes, the real kind! We observed night crawlers and discussed their bodies, their slimy skin and how they breathe. And like all good scientists do, we recorded our observations...

We also spent time discussing and making bar graphs. We collected data from our classmates and made bar graphs to represent our data.

We read this great story this week called Penguin Chick. We learned a lot about penguins, and to wrap our penguin week up, what better movie to watch than Happy Feet?!

Chaperone Info

FIELD TRIP MONEY & PERMISSION FORM DUE BY SEPTEMBER 28TH!!!!!!!!
If you would like to chaperone the October 1st field trip, please have your child's form turned in by Thursday. We will put names in a hat and draw one chaperone to accompany us to the movie.
Remember: Any chaperone can meet us at Chucky Cheese -we are just limited to the number that we can take into the movie theater.

FYI: All students will be required to return to school on the bus with his or her class.

Penguin Chick, Book Order, and Field Trip

This week, we'll be reading Penguin Chick (we might also watch a penguin-related movie - can you guess what it is?!)
Spelling words: finish, pilot, even, wagon, music, silent, rapid, female, lemon, pupil, focus, robot, tulip, camel, salad, resident, spinach, climate, tradition, innocent

Scholastic book orders are due tomorrow. I will place the order tomorrow afternooon!

Your child brought home a field trip letter Friday (if he or she was there after P.E.). We are going to see the movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and then we're heading to Chucky Cheese. The cost of the trip is $18, which covers the bus fare, the movie, popcorn and a drink at the movie, 2 slices of pizza and a drink at Chucky Cheese, and $3 in tokens. Money is due no later than September 28th.

The Incredible, Edible Cell

We have been learning about cells in 3rd grade...we've learned about some of the parts of cells and their functions. Friday, we made edible cells.

Some of us made plant cells. We know that they're more rectangular in shape and they have a cell wall, a cell membrane, cytoplasm (the blue stuff), a nucleus (the control center), ribosomes (the cell's DNA), and chloroplasts (these contain chlorophyll, and that's why plants are green!).




Animal cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm, a nucleus, and ribosomes. They do not have chloroplasts (which is why we're not green!).

We made a big mess and probably came home Friday with blue fingers, but we had a lot of fun and I can tell we've learned a lot about plant and animal cells!

Cell Projects are due this Friday!!! You choose whether to make a plant or animal cell...look at the guidelines and be creative!
